From April 5 to 6, 2018 there will be a conference in Maastricht with as theme:
“Law, science and rationality”
Much of the law is based on the idea of legal subjects as rational and free agents. These fundamental assumptions are increasingly called into question by insights from behavioural, cognitive and neurosciences. What, if anything, do these challenges mean for law?
This conference seeks to address, amongst others, the following topics:
• The (ir)relevance of free will for law
• The conceptual foundations of rationality in law
• The normative and psychological basis of legal responsibility
• Challenges of behavioural, cognitive and neurosciences for legal responsibility
• Legal and scientific perspectives on mental capacities and states (such as intention)
• Rationality in legal decision-making in the light of behavioural, cognitive and neurosciences
• Philosophy of law in the context of behavioural, cognitive and neurosciences
The confirmed keynote speakers will be Maureen Sie (Tilburg University, NL) and Nicole Vincent (Macquarie University, Australia).
Authors are invited to submit abstracts of papers on these topics and related ones to lawsupport@maastrichtuniversity.nl before January 10, 2018. Abstracts should be in Word-format, written in English, and about 1000 words long. Please include also an additional list of references.
Speakers will be selected on the basis of academic quality, originality and topical fit with other papers. We aim to respond to all submissions before the end of February.
