Masterclass Description: This master class examines law as social historical phenomena that develop
over time in relation to surrounding social, cultural, economic, political, technological, and ecological
conditions. A key factor in this development is the increase over time of social complexity. The
theoretical underpinnings of this approach are philosophical pragmatism, social constructionism, and
naturalism, which give rise to a holistic, historicist view of law. With this theoretical background in place,
we examine state law, legal pluralism (religious law, indigenous law, European Union law, and more),
international and transnational law, and natural law and human rights. Background reading material on
selected topics will be provided. The class will be conducted through a series of brief lectures and
discussion of each topic. Participants are asked to read the assigned material in advance and engage in
discussion.

Practicalities: To those who wish to participate in person and/or online, please send an e-mail to
j.turco@uva.nl to confirm your attendance before Friday May 5th 2023.

The class will involve a combination of reading material, lectures, and discussions, therefore those
participating offline should be involved in all three components. The reading material along with the
zoom link will be shared to the participants closer to the date.

The class will be hybrid and will be located in REC A3.01 (research seminar room) and online via zoom.
There is no cost for participation
