The winner of the VWR dissertation award 2025 is Hylke Jellema. He received the award for his thesis “(Im)probable stories: combining Bayesian and explanation-based accounts of rational criminal proof.”

In his thesis, Jellema addresses the theory of evidence from the perspective of analytical epistemology. In a very original way, Jellema combines Bayesian probabilities and explanation-based approaches in order to formulate his own theory of evidence. The thesis discusses a difficult topic but is clearly written and well-argued. Different concepts are carefully disentangled and explained. Importantly, the argument is clear both in the individual building blocks of the chapters and in the overarching whole, in this way the different parts convincingly contribute to the larger whole. For a thesis written in separate articles this is quite an achievement.
