Spring Meeting 2015

The VWR Spring Meeting 2015 will take place on 19th June, from 13.00 to 17.00 at the University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. The theme of the meeting is ‘Legal philosophy in legal education’. Current tendencies such as more contact hours and possible extended requirements for “Civiel Effect” puts legal-philosophical education under pressure. Therefore, it is important to discuss the position of legal philosophy in legal education. How is legal-philosophical education organized within law school? What is the share of it in the bachelor and master and what is the importance of legal-philosophical knowledge for lawyers?

During the meeting, two recent Dutch studybooks on legal philosophy will be discussed during the plenary discussion, to wit ‘Mens en mensenrechten. Basisboek rechtsfilosofie’ by Thomas Mertens en ‘Recht als raadsel. Een inleiding in de rechtsfilosofie’ by Pauline Westerman. Subsequently, participants will discuss in interactive subgroups different aspects of legal-philosophical education, such as legal-philosophical theses, exams and the subjects that are discussed in the courses.

The Annual Members Meeting will take place prior to the Spring Meeting, from 11.30 to 12.30.

13.15-15.00: Part I: Plenary session on studybooks legal philosophy
13.15-13.45: Anne Ruth Mackor (RUG) on P. Westerman, Het recht als raadsel. Inleiding in de rechtsfilosofie.

16.00-16.45: Presenting conclusions and discussion statements, followed by plenary discussion.

16.45-17.00: VWR Dissertation award ceremony
